What to Do When You Keep Getting the Same CPA Questions Wrong
If you keep missing the same concept, stop treating each wrong answer like a separate mistake. The pattern is telling you that the underlying rule has not stuck yet.
First: what kind of miss was it?
Careless miss
You knew the rule but misread, rushed, or clicked the wrong option.
Slow down; major review may not be needed.One-time knowledge gap
You did not know or remember the tested rule.
Review the exact concept, then continue.Repeated conceptual miss
The same underlying idea keeps causing errors even after review.
Stop and escalate the review. My rule: the second meaningful miss changes the response
The first time I missed a concept, I would go back to the relevant source material and review that specific rule.
If I later missed the same underlying concept again, that was my signal that the first review had not stuck and I needed to study it differently.
The 4-Step Reset
1. Name it
Identify the actual concept behind the question.
2. Rebuild it
Go back to the source material and rebuild the rule from the ground up.
3. Make it active
Type or write the idea in your own words so you have to process it.
4. Test it again
Try a different question later and make sure the concept actually stuck.
Don’t memorize the question
Do not try to remember that “B was correct last time.” Ask what rule or concept the question was testing and why your original reasoning failed. A different CPA question can change the facts, numbers, or wording while testing the exact same rule.
When to move on
After the reset, try the concept again later using a different question. If you can apply the rule correctly and explain why, move on instead of over-drilling it.
Keep going
