CPA 74 Retake Guide · Updated November 2026

I Got a 74 on the CPA Exam. Should I Retake It Immediately?

Probably soon, but not blindly. A 74 is close to the passing standard, but it is a scaled score and does not mean exactly one question away.

Why a quick retake can make sense

If you tested recently, the material is still fresh. You already have the knowledge base, Exam experience, and a sense of which topics felt weak.

But do not just book tomorrow

First diagnose whether the problem was broad knowledge, one Area, TBS execution, timing, careless mistakes, or a repeated weak topic.

Use the Candidate Performance Report

Review it if available, but do not study only the category labeled Weaker. Your next Exam will contain different questions.

A 74 retake plan

Day 1

Review the Score Notice and your own weak concepts.

Days 2 to 5

Hit the biggest weaknesses.

Then

Run mixed MCQs, practice TBSs, and check pacing.

Schedule

When the evidence looks stable again.

When I would retake quickly

A quick retake makes more sense when the first attempt was recent, most content is familiar, weaknesses are specific, and you can study intensively for several days or a couple weeks.

When I would not rush it

Take more time if you guessed constantly, TBSs were broadly confusing, major content was never completed, you memorized the question bank, or a long gap has passed since the attempt.

Should you switch sections?

At 74, I would usually consider finishing the section while the knowledge is fresh unless a Discipline window, work deadline, credit issue, or another scheduled section changes the decision.

What not to do

  • Restart every lecture automatically.
  • Rewrite every note.
  • Study only one Weaker Area.
  • Use only memorized questions.
  • Book tomorrow with zero review.

The takeaway

A 74 usually calls for repair, not reinvention.
