CPA Exam Break Rules: Bathroom, Food, Phone, and the 15-Minute Break
The CPA Exam has more than one type of break. One standardized break does not use your Exam time, while optional breaks do.
The standard 15-minute break
Every section offers a standardized 15-minute break after Testlet 3. You can accept or decline it. If accepted, the 15 minutes do not reduce the four-hour testing clock.
Should you take it?
For most candidates, I would. Use the time to use the restroom, reset, move around, and drink or eat if permitted under the test-center break rules.
Optional breaks
You can also take optional breaks between testlets, but the clock keeps running. Seven minutes on an optional break means seven fewer minutes for the Exam.
Can you take a break in the middle of a testlet?
Do not treat the Exam like it can be freely paused halfway through a testlet. Normal break opportunities occur between testlets.
What if you suddenly need the bathroom?
Use scheduled break opportunities when possible. If you have a medical condition requiring additional or clock-stopping breaks, address it through the accommodations process before the Exam.
Can you check your phone?
No. Current test-center rules prohibit access to personal communication devices while you are still actively taking the Exam, including breaks.
What about a smartwatch?
Do not treat a smartwatch as a break-time device. Personal electronic devices remain restricted.
Can you eat during the break?
Food is not permitted inside the testing room under standard rules. Break access to stored items is governed by the testing-center procedures.
Can you drink water?
Current Prometric guidance permits certain qualifying water containers under applicable rules. Check the current permissible-items list before Exam day.
What happens when you leave the room?
Test-center staff control exit, security, re-entry, and identity verification. Follow their instructions.
How long should an optional break be?
As short as practical. If you need two minutes for the restroom, that may be worth it. Fifteen minutes sitting in the lobby is fifteen minutes gone from the Exam.
Break strategy by testlet
After Testlet 1
Usually keep going unless you genuinely need a break.
After Testlet 2
Use judgment before the first TBS testlet.
After Testlet 3
Use the standardized 15-minute break.
After Testlet 4
If you can keep going, finish the final TBS testlet.
Do not study during breaks
Do not access study materials, reconstruct questions, message someone about Exam content, or search rules. The Exam is still in progress and confidentiality still applies.
The takeaway
Standard 15-minute break: clock paused. Optional breaks: clock running.
During either one, follow Prometric rules and keep your phone away.
