CPA Exam NTS Name Does Not Match ID: Will Prometric Let You Test?

Do not wait until Prometric check-in to find out whether your name is wrong. Your NTS and acceptable identification need to satisfy the CPA Exam identification rules.

What happens if the names do not match?

You can be denied admission, which can mean no Exam, a lost appointment, and potentially forfeited fees.

What should match?

Check first name, last name, middle name or initial, suffix if applicable, name order, and spelling. Compare the actual documents, not your memory.

Middle name vs middle initial

Current NASBA guidance allows certain limited middle-name differences, such as a middle initial substituting for a full middle name or vice versa. Do not turn that into a general rule that names do not need to match.

What if you changed your name?

If your legal identification changed after the application, contact the Board or Exam-processing organization. Do not assume an old NTS and new legal ID will automatically be accepted.

What if the NTS has a typo?

Request a correction immediately through the office or agency where you submitted the application.

How close to the Exam can you fix it?

Do not wait. Current NASBA guidance says changes cannot be made to an NTS less than five days before the appointment.

What if the Exam is tomorrow?

Contact the applicable authority immediately, but do not assume a same-day correction is possible. You may need to address the appointment rather than showing up and hoping.

What ID should you use?

Use the current Candidate Guide's acceptable identification requirements. Before test day, choose your actual primary ID, check the expiration date, check the name, and compare it with the NTS.

What if the driver's license name is truncated?

Current guidance recognizes some specific name-format exceptions. If your situation is unusual, confirm before the Exam instead of relying on a forum answer.

What if you have two last names?

Some formatting differences may be acceptable, but a material mismatch should be resolved officially before the appointment.

Do not rely on opening the Portal at Prometric

Save and print the NTS. Do not depend on phone service or Portal availability at the test center.

What if you are denied admission?

If you are turned away because the NTS or identification does not satisfy the rules, follow the applicable NASBA or Board process immediately. Do not assume you can simply return the next day with the same appointment.

The takeaway

Compare the NTS with your actual ID as soon as you receive it.

If something material is wrong, fix it immediately.
