CPA Exam Sample Test: How to Use It Without Treating It Like a Mock Exam

The AICPA sample test is useful, but it is easy to use it for the wrong purpose. It is primarily for software and format familiarity, not readiness prediction.

What is the AICPA sample test?

It is a shorter testing experience using software similar to what candidates encounter at the testing center. It includes content from AUD, FAR, REG, BAR, ISC, and TCP, which is why it is not a full practice section.

How long is it?

AICPA currently gives candidates up to two hours to use the sample test. Each real CPA Exam section remains four hours.

What should you use it for?

Navigation

Learn where tools and testlet controls are.

TBS exhibits

Practice opening, moving, and reading several sources.

Spreadsheet

Try formulas and basic calculations.

Question formats

Get comfortable with MCQs, TBS fields, dropdowns, and tables.

Software comfort

Remove interface surprise before test day.

What should you not use it for?

Do not use it as a readiness predictor or full mock score. It mixes material across all six sections.

Why the sample score does not matter much

If you are studying AUD and miss a tax question in the sample, that tells you almost nothing about whether you are ready for AUD.

When should you use it?

Use it late enough that the interface is relevant but before test day, ideally during final review or several days before the appointment.

Do not wait until the night before

You do not need brand-new software anxiety the evening before Prometric.

What should you practice in the spreadsheet?

Basic formulas, addition, subtraction, multiplication, cell references, and a small schedule. You are removing friction, not becoming an Excel power user.

What should you practice with TBSs?

Read the requirement first, scan the response fields, open exhibits with a purpose, use the spreadsheet, complete independent fields, and review before submission.

What if you score badly?

Do not translate that into “I am going to fail.” Ask whether the problem was content from another section or genuine interface difficulty.

What if you score really well?

Do not over-interpret that either. Use your real study evidence: mixed MCQs, weak-area performance, TBS familiarity, pacing, and final review.

Sample test vs review-course simulated exam

AICPA sample test

Best for interface, official formats, software, and tools.

Review-course simulated exam

Can be better for section-specific content, timing, and longer practice.

What about accommodations?

If your actual Exam will use approved accessibility tools, practice with the applicable sample environment when available.

Sample-test checklist

  • Open MCQs.
  • Navigate testlets.
  • Open and move exhibits.
  • Enter TBS responses.
  • Use the spreadsheet.
  • Use calculator functionality.
  • Find the Exam clock.
  • Submit a testlet.

The takeaway

Use the sample test to answer: Do I know how to use the CPA Exam software?

Do not use it to answer: Am I guaranteed to pass?
