CPA MCQ Planning Guide · Updated November 2026

How Many CPA Exam MCQs Should You Do Per Day?

There is no magic number. You can do 100 MCQs badly or 30 MCQs extremely well.

My default framework

If studying around work, 20 to 50 quality MCQs can be a productive session. If studying full-time, 50 to 100 or more may be realistic. Those are planning ranges, not passing requirements.

Why “just do 100 a day” can fail

One hundred questions with shallow review can be worse than 40 questions with careful diagnosis, targeted notes, and clean reattempts.

Question volume is not the goal

The goal is fewer unresolved weaknesses.

Use sets

Try 25 questions, review, short break, then another 25. That creates natural checkpoints and keeps review attached to the questions that created the weakness.

When higher volume makes sense

Higher volume works better when the material is already covered, you are in mixed review, most questions are not brand new, and you can still review misses properly.

When lower volume makes sense

Lower volume may be better when the material is new, questions are calculation-heavy, you are missing many concepts, or fatigue is making review sloppy.

Section differences matter

A complicated FAR calculation and a conceptual ISC item are not identical workloads. Do not compare raw question counts as if they always mean the same thing.

How do you know you are doing too many?

  • You stop reading explanations.
  • You recognize answers instead of solving.
  • You click just to hit the number.
  • Accuracy collapses from fatigue.
  • You cannot remember what you missed.

Daily MCQ template

Short study day

20 to 30 MCQs with deep review.

Normal study day

40 to 60 MCQs plus miss review and reattempts.

Full review day

Several sets totaling 75 to 100+ if review quality stays high.

The takeaway

Do not optimize for biggest question count. Optimize for most weaknesses fixed.
