Night-Before Guide · Updated November 2026

Should You Study the Night Before the CPA Exam or Just Rest?

I would not do a full study marathon the night before. The final evening is for light reinforcement, logistics, and sleep.

What I would review

Keep it narrow: mnemonics, formulas, thresholds, small reference tables, a short list of known weak rules, and maybe a small question set.

What I would not do

  • Learn a brand-new chapter.
  • Complete a giant TBS marathon.
  • Redo every missed question.
  • Take a full simulated Exam late at night.

Why cramming can backfire

The value of another exhausted study block may be lower than sleeping, eating normally, and arriving alert enough to perform for four hours.

What if you feel like you forgot everything?

Ask whether you truly have major knowledge gaps or whether the Exam being tomorrow is making everything feel inaccessible.

A simple day-before plan

Morning

Short targeted review.

Early afternoon

Mnemonics, formulas, or a few weak points.

Late afternoon

Stop.

Evening

Prepare NTS, ID, clothes, transport, food, and alarm.

Night

Sleep.

Should you do MCQs?

A small 10 to 25 question set can be fine for staying warm. Do not let one random set at night become a new verdict on your readiness.

Night-before checklist

  • NTS accessible.
  • ID ready.
  • Correct test center and time.
  • Transportation planned.
  • Alarm set.
  • Food and caffeine plan decided.
  • Studying stopped at a reasonable time.

The takeaway

The night before is not where you become ready. It is where you protect the preparation you already did.
